Out of the cup despite a dominate performance!

Glyn Old Boys were in the top 3 of division South 1 and despite the league position The Egs dominated from the opening whistle, with Mike and Joe both having efforts early. The Egs were playing some great football passing the ball out to the wings where Adam and Joe certainly had the beating of the Glyn full backs. The opening goal came from a great pass from Bill Morgan who found Mike on the edge of the box, mike beat a player then turned firing a shot low into the right corner and left the keeper with no chance. The rest of the half saw has have several chances that were either directly at the keeper or saw him pull of a great save, we needed a second to settle us down before half time but it would just not come.

The second half we again started to dominate the game but Glyn seemed to have worked out a weak link as they sat back and started to hit us on the break, within 10 mins of the restart we found ourselves 2-1 down after two almost identical goals that came from a ball over the top with the winger running on then pulling it back to the oncoming striker! This really spurred Glyn on and they started to have some good spells, passing the ball nicely and having a few chances that forced Scully into making some great saves. We kept fighting and looking desperately for a goal to take us into extra time and it came after a lovely ball over the top from Manning and it was met by our returning striker from last season who made the finish look easy.

Extra time was going on for an eternity, I think the ref had forgot that he was keeping time! We found the net with 10 mins left and it was again James Hooper putting it away after Joe beat two players working his way across the box. But the celebration was short lived as Glyn hit us quickly fining the net directly from the KO. We had the ball in the net a final time before the whistle after a shot from Chris was deflected back to the oncoming Dan Morgan, Glyn’s heads dropped in disbelief as the ball went under the legs of the keeper who had until this point had a fantastic game! BUT it was our heads that dropped moments later when the ref wrongly gave an offside…

We eventually lost 3-1 on Pens as we put one over and had one saves and despite a great effort from the players the best team did not win. Good luck to Glyn they were a good bunch of lads that kept fighting to the end and I hope they do well in the tournament.
