Our first time in the Old Boys Senior Cup and might be the clubs first time playing in a Senior Cup?
Well we certainly looked at home at this level taking on a good Old Stationers Team who have not had the best form coming into the game. Still you wouldn’t have known it based on the way they started, they passed the ball about nicely, were big & strong and looked very organized! It was all Stationers for the first ten mins as they passed the ball about and made us do all the running, we eventually started to get in to the game when the constant pressure started to show and some of the Stationers passing was tailing off! We exposed their 3 at the back system playing the ball wider on the wings and getting in behind them and it worked well for our first goal as Rhys picked up the ball on the left and pulled into the middle playing a great cross ball to brother Joe who powered home to make it 1-0. Rhys then came very close to making it 2-0 when he was denied by the post.
The second half saw us keep plugging away and we hit the bar twice with Webbo and Rhys both having the beating of the keeper but it was a long shot from Pringle that put us 2-0 up when Ryan F pulled out the right beating the full back and passed to just outside the box for the oncoming Geordie who had previously that day scored a “Worldie” for the 3s. 2-0 up and we were still being put under pressure by a good side in Stationers but our steady hands keeper was looking too hot in the sticks and pulled off a couple of “Worldies” of his own. With a few mins to go how we didn’t extend our lead to four I’ll never know when Webbo made a great run past the defence and was denied by the keeper and then another great ball played him in one on one only again to have the keeper tip it away….
A great result that puts us up against the unbeaten SAL Senior Div 1 Team Old Owens in what will no doubt be the biggest test of the Might Bertian Boys….
