A strange game/experience yesterday.
Without the distraction/drain on resources of playing two simultaneous fixtures, like last week, we fielded a strong and balanced side.
I thought we started well and got a rhythm about our play. The pre-match instructions were adhered too mostly although communication among players on the pitch could have been a little better - which would resulted in a quicker pressing/regaining of possession etc.
There was a little too much running with the ball in places too which slowed the game down too much.
Aside from these observations - we played well and did what we had to do - which was to punish the opposition, move them around, tire them out and create goal scoring chances. We did all of this and was well on our way to a resounding victory when they picked up an injury, taking them down to 9 men. Their frustration boiled over and their captain swore at the ref for a minor infringement. The referee probably could have shown a little flexibility given the context of this players frustrations and given a final warning. In stead he sent their captain off taking Salvatorians down to 8 men.
At this point two of the oppo walked off the pitch feeling it was a lost cause and that there was no point on staying on.
The referee as well as ourselves asked the oppo to at least play the 2nd game as their captain would still be eligible to play in that. They declined this offer and even refused to have an ' informal match' in the referees absence.
The sad thing was that it was the 3 senior lads who refused to play and set a poor example to the rest of their team. The young lads in the team wanted to play on but could not do so due to numbers.
We have a slim chance of promotion still but have to get maximum points from our remaining 4 fixtures. We may also have to play the second Salvatorian fixture as it was not played.
Maximum effort for training and the last few weeks is required now.
