1st Team 3 - 2 Old Easthamians
Date: 2014-10-18
Venue: Home
Referee:

Old Easthamians are a well organised and effective outfit. They had limited skill and guile but worked very hard.

We matched their work rate and our passing and playing style came through. We started well and tussled in the first 10-15 mins with the oppo to impose ourselves. But after this period a few quick passing moves saw us create 3 genuine scoring chances during the next 10 minutes.

We carried on playing in this keenly contested game and had a ball cleared off their line a towards the end of the half. We went in at half time 0-0 but thoroughly unlucky not to be ahead.

The beginning of the 2nd half started well - for the first 5 mins. Then a cross into their box was cut out and a long ball up the middle saw their striker put our center back under pressure resulting in a miscued pass back being directed into the back of our net. This did not stop us and we carried playing and posing problems of the oppo. We had shots charged down within their penalty area during this phase.

Then a breakaway move down our left flank saw a poorly hit cross and the resultant bobbling of the ball from the oppo turned into the net by our keeper. This was bad luck and not a fair reflection of the match up until this point.

We carried on applying pressure and hit the crossbar with a thunderous shot from the edge of the area courtesy of Nick Lewis. With 20 minutes to go Mike Ramsey was brought on. Within a few minutes Ramsey slid a ball into Liam Adams path for him to run through on goal and beat the keeper with a low hard drive. From this point on their was only one winner. We applied more pressure, won the ball back quickly, matched them in 50/50 duels and tracked runners. We broke on their goal again and Mike Ramsey was their to slot a precision cross from Nick Lewis.

At 2-2 the game was still keenly contested. But Egbertians had the quality and pace in attache to stretch the oppo. We dominated possession and moved the ball around quickly. Our third and winning goal came from some composed football around the half way line. A switch of play and we carved them open again. Nick Lewis bagged the winner with 4 minutes to go.

We saw out the game and could have had another goal but for the keeper pulling of a great save.

The referee complemented us post match and said we were unlucky not to have won 5-0! The team showed spirit, guile and work rate to humble an opposition who sit 3/4 divisions ahead of us within the SAL.

A great performance
