Egbertian IV got back to winning ways with an evening win against Old Tollingtons at Peter May. Lining up in an unfamiliar 3-5-2 system, Egs were slow out of the blocks on the hottest day of the year so far. The players gradually grew into the system and whilst remaining solid at the back, couldn’t quite get their passing game going on a very dry pitch. That said, they did fashion some wonderful opportunities with Kyle McLean forcing a wonderful save from 20 yards with a left foot volley destined for the top corner. The goalkeepers parry was just enough to keep it from spinning over the line. It was another devilish set piece, a regular feature throughout, that saw Egs take the lead. Pybus whipped in a free kick from 40 yards and Goulding glanced his header into the net to claim advantage at the break. A tactical reshuffle saw the Egs revert to a more familiar 4-4-2 formation with McCann slotting into midfield alongside McLean, and Kent dropping back into defence. A resolute defence was undone however by a reckless challenge by Garrett to give Tollies a chance to even things up from the spot. While the keeper went the right way, there was too much pace on the penalty and despite it being their first shot on goal, the away side drew parity. That only inspired the home side, and another change saw Will Kent pushed up front with Goulding pushed wide in an attempt to create some chances and hold the ball up in the oppositions half. The switch immediately tipped the balance to Egs favour with Kent being at the heart of some excellent chances including hitting the woodwork. With 4 minutes to go, Tolls goalkeeper was pressured into a hash of a clearance leading him to be dispossessed and stranded outside of his box. The loose ball was rolled to Will who stroked home into an empty net to secure the points.
