It really was a game of two halves. I changed the formation drastically in the first half partly due to our lack of goal chances created in previous games and the weakness of the opposition.
With some fresh faces/debuts in our starting line up - things were confused and disjointed. Instructions were not really taken on board and we struggled to get any rhythm going. From a direct ball over our back four, their striker ran into the box and held up up the ball and drew a mistimed tackle and a penalty was given. Parms converted the kick. It was deserved and we were awful and disjointed.
We struggled to get our game going and limped through to half time.
I held my hand up at half time and switched back to our usual formation. We dominated the second half and started pulling the oppo about. That said we still were not getting shots off on their goal and their keeper was pretty untested. Then after about 60 minutes a cross was dropped by their keeper and Mike Ramsay was on hand to pass the ball into the net. This stroke of luck was needed. We pressed and pushed for a second goal. But we left ourselves open a few times from sporadic attacks. These attacks from Parms caused us some problems and a pull back from one attack saw a glaring open goal missed by them. This was another 'get out of jail card' for us.
As we pressed for the second goal, we made some subs and used the bench effectively to keep up our tempo. The breakthough goal came from James Dennis who received the ball 30 yards out. Held onto the ball for an option to open up. None was there. He hit a rising strike that went straight into the top left hand corner. The 3rd goal came quickly after. We regained possession down the right hand side and a sequence of passes saw Ollie Campbell run down the wing. Two lads were waiting for the cross and but Ollie Campbell lashed a near post shot into the roof of the net with the keeper leaving his near post open.
The fourth goal again came from some good link play down the right hand side between Erik and Theo. A cross to the left hand corner of the penalty area was met by Tom Dodd. He half volleyed the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal - game over.
It was strong second half and the win was deserved. But we again made it hard for ourselves with a shocking 1st half display.
We have a big game on Wednesday. We play Minchendenians who are going for the league and will play 1st teamers and whoever is available in order to win the game. We need to do a job on them.
