A great win yesterday. Carrying on from our recent performances.
We started well and retained possession against an organised and fit side. We had them chasing shadows for the first 25-30 minutes. With this pressure we created a few openings but their keeper was good and saved a couple chances.
The oppo had a free kick from 35 yards out. The rising drive was tipped onto the crossbar by Heppy - one of the two outstanding saves of the game. We probably could have recycled the ball better in the final 3rd in order to create more chances but it was a strong first half nevertheless.
We made a couple of changes at start of the 2nd half and resumed our dominance. From a corner Craig Hopkingson rose at the back post and powered a looping header back across the goal into the net. This opener was fully deserved. Our corners created chaos with the oppo all game with the good deliveries from Bobby Clark, Nick Lewis and Tomek Schwarz. We created about 4/5 goal moth scrambles as a result.
5 minutes after going ahead we failed to clear our lines and couple of lucky rebounds etc saw the oppo striker race in on goal from an angle and clip the ball into the net. This was undeserved and a real sickener. We did not falter and scored from cleared corner which fell to Chad King who struck a crisp low drive into the bottom corner to no more that 5 minutes after the oppo had drawn level.
We went to on to dominate the game but failed to recycle well enough in the final 3rd. Or some dubious off sides provided some respite for Magdelanians. The second save of the game came from a stand in captain James Dennis. He got to the left hand corner of the penalty area, checked back in and clipped a lob into the top right hand corner. Everybody thought it was a 'nailed on' goal. But the oppo keeper scrambled across the goal and clawed the ball from under the cross bar and tipped the ball around the goal.
Our rhythm was upset a little with a few guys pulling up with injuries. But a full bench meant that we could absorb these changes.
Our 3rd goal came from more pressure resulting in a clipped pass down the right hand channel which saw Antonio Azevedo run onto to the ball. He out muscled the full back and dropped a shoulder to get past the covering centre back. He then side the steeped the keeper and had the goal at his mercy only to tease the recovering keeper and covering defender on the line. He hit a shot which beat the keeper and the covering defender on the line only for the defender to use his hand to block the the shot - PENALTY.
Antonio easily converted the spot kick.
We played out the remaining 5 minutes at ease and moved on into the LOB Cup semi final. Still got a lot t prove to ourselves looking at the league position. So we need the same again next week.
