Profligate finishing was once again the undoing of this ever improving Egbertian side in a thrilling cup tie with Meadonians. Dominant in terms of possession and chances, a host of gilt edged opportunities were spurned by the home side as they search for their first win of the season. A strong first eleven grabbed a foothold on the game in the first half built upon energetic pressing and fluent passing and with Meadonians playing such a high defensive line, it didn’t take long for Egbertians to work on a gameplan of threaded balls into the vacant final third. It was only courtesy of some contentious offside calls that the timed passes and corresponding runs by the Egs forward line didn’t amount to more one on one situations. Situations that the home team more than likely would have spurned. In fact it was with one of these one on ones that Egbertians finally broke the deadlock. Kennedy was delightfully fed through and although his thunderous effort rocketed off the woodwork, Goulding was alert and on hand to follow up and bundle the ricochet over the line. The superbly marshalled Egbertians defence limited their opponents to pot shots in the first half save for a 30 yard free kick that was miraculously clawed out of the top corner by Garrett. Their own breakthrough came from a moment of fortuity as a through ball bobbled off an unfortunate defending leg offering a clear path to goal that was rewarded with a clinical finish. The home team lost the initiative in the second half and would live to rue the missed chances yet they took the lead again through Holland following some good work down the right hand side by Kennedy. Not long after however a clever cut back from Meadonians number 11 – a constant threat throughout – saw the away team draw level and neither side could finish off the game in normal time, nor the first period of extra time. The second saw tired legs become exploited by the young number 11 whose constant trickery, clever footwork and, more tellingly, cute finishing, saw the advantage turned over to Meadonians. This followed another chance that had previously been turned off the line heroically by Pybus. The away team responded to the increasing pressure by ruthlessly finishing the tie off after some negligible defending gave a grateful striker a free shot at goal inside the 18 yard box. The 7th goal of the afternoon was despatched by the team in green, and although it roused thoughts of a stirring comeback, it was a mere consolation and they were left to rue the missed opportunities. They should however remain buoyed by the creativity that afforded them so many chances. Meadonians will progress to the next round of the cup, but Egbertians will learn from this. There is no doubt a landslide victory heading their way.
