A great win today against Leyton County who are unbeaten this season and sat top of the league. The performance was full off commitment and ability.
The inconsistent turnout of the first part of this season reared its head again. With 5 lads away we were at bare bones. That said we had 12 as off Saturday morning.
One cry-off at noon and one no show left us with only ten lads available......
We started the game OK. The shape was good considering we were trying out a new system. The oppo switched play a lot to causing us problems but we weathered the pressure and even managed a few counter attacks. Then a hopeful diagonal punt out of the back saw their winger latch onto a ball. Cut inside and a low speculative shot crept in at the near post with our keeper unsighted.
We held on with some increased pressure from Leyton County and started playing the better football.
We got to half time. Had a q quick regroup and went out and played the football. We had a few attacks which resulted in goal scoring opportunities but unfortunately they didn't come off. Then with about 25 mins to go another break from us saw a cross cleared to the edge of the area. Ollie brought the ball down and drilled a low cross shot into corner. Game on! Leyton County started putting in a number of rough/late tackles to get back into the game. But our passing was causing them problems and we had a few more breaks and opportunities to get the winner. Even with 10 men we outplayed the oppo. That said Danny pulled off about 4/5 game changes saves and during the game.
The winner came from another move which saw Ollie break through on a 1v1 chase with a centre back. The defender lunged for the ball and brought down Ollie - Penalty. Ollie dispatched the penalty by sending the keeper the wrong way.
We pretty much saw the last 8 minutes with a few more attacks which could have resulted in a 3rd goal. A great team performance and great debut from Connor Gardener too.
