Egbertians IV suffered their first league defeat this year with a text book smash and grab performance from Wood Green Old boys. The Egs started slowly in what was a very scrappy affair, with both teams struggling to impose themselves on the game. After 20 mins Egs started to create some half chances with Goulding testing the Wood Green keeper from long range, White having a header cleared off the line and then on the stroke of half time White saw an effort just go the wrong side of the post. The match then turned on its head when Wood Green were awarded a soft penalty straight after half time. The Wood Green winger was running away from goal, with the ball at his feet, he took a tumble in the area with the Referee pointing to the spot. The penalty was dispatched in what was the home sides first effort on target. The goal sparked Egs into a response and for the next 40 mins it was one way traffic with the Egs desperate to get a foothold back in the game. Half chances came and went and it seemed like it was going to be one of those days as goal mouth scrambles and rebounds didn't fall the Egs way. The last piece of action summed up the match as Egs went all out for a goal in the last min. Kent showed some great skill by juggling the ball over the defenders head and as the ball dropped he lashed a left foot volley that somehow hit the post and bounced away from the waiting Egs players. Wood Green then broke and looked certain to score a second with their second effort on target but Garrett pulled off a fantastic save to his left to keep it at 1-0 as the referee blew for full time. Egbertians need to re-group and pick themselves up as they will face many better sides than Wood Green in the end of season run in.
